<li><i class="fas fa-dot-circle mr-2 clr"></i>A two-piece metal template, usually made of iron or steel, is formed in the shape of the desired part. Other materials, such as aluminium for low-volume production or graphite for casting reactive compounds, are occasionally utilised.</li>
<li><i class="fas fa-dot-circle mr-2 clr"></i>To make the mould, heat each pattern half to 175-370 °C (350-700 °F) and coat it with a lubricant to make it easier to remove. The heated pattern is fastened to a dump box containing a fine silica sand combination and a thermosetting phenolic resin binder. Inverting the dump box allows the sand-resin mixture to coat the pattern. The mixture partially cures when the pattern is heated, forming a shell around it. The thickness of the shell varies from 10 to 20 mm depending on the time and temperature of the design. Each pattern half and surrounding shell is cured in an oven until it reaches 350 to 450 psi (2.4 to 3.1 MPa) tensile strength, and then the shell is expelled from the pattern. </li>
